ROCKET YOGA MASTERCLASSES – ROCKET III
With Lita Sattva
Rocket Vinyasa Yoga was created by Larry Schultz in California. Larry met K. Pattabhi Jois in 1982 and continued his studies and practice with Pattabhi in Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, for about 7 years, between India and the US.
Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, Mysore Style, as taught by Jois, had a very strict progressive teaching method. For example, you should master the pose 7 before even trying the pose 8, and so on, and only the teacher can authorise you to evolve to a new one. Larry Schultz opposed to this method as he believed it was very restrictive to his evolution as a yoga student. Not everyone is physically able to put a leg behind the head, and that doesn’t mean lack of practice or will, it might only mean that the body structure doesn’t allow that particular pose to happen. Along the way he starts to introduce modifications in the Ashtanga Vinyasa sequence that would allow anyone to evolve unrestricted throughout the practice, and starts his own teaching method, later called Rocket Yoga. The name Rocket came in the 90’s when Schultz was teaching yoga to the Grateful Dead’s Band, and Bob Weir, a member of the band, said, ”it should be called The Rocket, because it gets you there faster.”
Rocket is for everyone, it’s inclusive, it’s a challenging sequence but with pose variations and modifications to suit all body types and practice levels. Nowadays, Rocket Vinyasa Yoga has been growing a huge community all over the World.
With these 3 Masterclasses, we will enjoy 3 sessions of 2h30 of Rocket practice each, where we will explore the 3 Rocket sequences. Each session will focus on a particular sequence but in all you’ll find a dynamic and intense practice through inversion and strong transitions.
We will experience a meditative state through movement and breath. We will also touch base in the realm of Kriyas and Pranayama. We will aim to make the sessions challenging, physically and mentally. All sessions will be delivered in English and sanskrit with uplifting music and will include demonstrations and hands-on assists.
