Why Pelvic Health Matters After Pregnancy

By a Women’s Health Physiotherapist

Bringing a baby into the world is an incredible achievement, but pregnancy and childbirth can place significant demands on a woman’s body. While much attention is focused on the baby, it is equally important for mothers to take care of their own recovery and wellbeing.

Many women experience symptoms after childbirth such as pelvic floor weakness, bladder leaks, pelvic heaviness, abdominal separation (diastasis recti), back pain, scar discomfort, or pain during exercise and daily activities. These issues are common, but they should not be considered a normal part of motherhood that must simply be accepted.

A postnatal physiotherapy assessment, often called a Mummy Check, helps identify any concerns early and provides personalised advice to support recovery and long-term health.

When Is the Best Time to See a Women’s Health Physiotherapist?

If you feel comfortable, the ideal time to have a postnatal assessment is between 4–6 weeks after giving birth. Early assessment can help identify any concerns, guide your recovery, and give you confidence when returning to daily activities and exercise. However, it is never too late to seek help, whether you are a few weeks, months or even years postpartum.

What Does a Mummy Check Include?

During the assessment, your Women’s Health Physiotherapist will:

  • Assess your pelvic floor muscles, including strength, coordination and function.
  • Check your abdominal muscles for diastasis recti (abdominal separation) and assess core strength.
  • Perform a postural assessment to identify any changes contributing to pain or discomfort.
  • Assess any caesarean section or perineal scars if needed.
  • Discuss and assess any symptoms such as pelvic pain, back pain, pelvic heaviness, bladder or bowel concerns and difficulties returning to exercise.

The appointment is tailored to your individual needs and recovery goals.

Simple Pelvic Floor Tips

  • Practice pelvic floor exercises daily.
  • Avoid holding your breath when lifting your baby or pushing a pram.
  • Stay hydrated and avoid constipation
  • Gradually return to exercise and seek professional guidance if you experience leaking, heaviness or pain.
  • Remember that recovery takes time. Every woman’s journey is different.

The initial assessment takes 60 minutes and provides a comprehensive evaluation of your postnatal recovery.

Appointments are available every Saturday from 10:00am to 2:00pm at Light Centre Belgravia.
