Back and Pelvic Discomfort during Pregnancy. Can the Webster Technique help?

The Webster Technique: Supporting a Healthier, More Comfortable Pregnancy

Pregnancy is an incredible time of change for the body, but those changes can also bring discomfort and challenges — particularly in the lower back and pelvis. At Marylebone Chiropractic Clinic, we’re proud to offer the Webster Technique, a specialised chiropractic approach designed to support pelvic balance, comfort, and optimal positioning for both mother and baby.

What Is the Webster Technique?

The Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment that focuses on the alignment and function of the pelvis. By reducing tension in the muscles, ligaments, and joints of the pelvic region, this technique helps restore biomechanical balance and reduce interference in the nervous system.

In simpler terms, the Webster Technique helps the body work more efficiently during pregnancy — relieving pain, easing tension, and creating the best possible environment for your growing baby.

The Theory Behind the Technique

During pregnancy, the pelvis plays a vital role in supporting both the mother and the developing baby. When the sacrum (the bone at the base of the spine) becomes restricted or misaligned, it can create tension in surrounding ligaments and muscles. This may, in turn, limit the space within the uterus — a condition sometimes referred to as intrauterine constraint.

The Webster Technique aims to correct these imbalances, allowing the baby more freedom to move and naturally settle into the most favourable position for birth — typically head down.

It’s important to note that the Webster Technique does not turn breech babies. Instead, it focuses on improving pelvic function and balance, which may give the baby the space needed to move into the correct position on their own.

What to Expect During a Webster Technique Session

At your appointment, your chiropractor will begin by assessing pelvic function and mobility. One common assessment used is the heel-to-buttock test, which helps identify any restrictions in the sacroiliac joint.

Next, through gentle chiropractic adjustments, your chiropractor will work to restore alignment and mobility to the pelvis. Soft tissue techniques may also be applied to release any tightness or imbalance in the surrounding ligaments and muscles.

Treatments are gentle, safe, and tailored to each patient’s needs. Most expectant mothers find the sessions relaxing and experience a noticeable reduction in discomfort after just a few visits.

Is Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy Safe?

In most cases, chiropractic care during pregnancy is safe and highly beneficial. A 2006 case series study found that 17 out of 17 pregnant women receiving chiropractic care for low back pain experienced no adverse effects, and 16 of them reported significant pain reduction within less than five days of treatment.

Your chiropractor will always perform a thorough assessment and take your medical history into account before beginning treatment.

Does It Affect the Baby?

No — the chiropractor does not make direct contact with the baby. The adjustments focus solely on the mother’s pelvis, muscles, and ligaments, ensuring the unborn child remains completely unaffected by the treatment.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

Every pregnancy — and every body — is unique. While some expectant mothers notice improvements after the first visit, most benefit from a course of four to six sessions to achieve and maintain lasting results. Your chiropractor will discuss a personalised treatment plan that supports your comfort and wellbeing throughout your pregnancy journey.
