Soul Retrieval: Reclaiming the Parts of Yourself That Were Lost

Soul Retrieval: Reclaiming the Parts of Yourself That Were Lost

Have you ever felt like a part of you is simply… missing? Perhaps after a difficult breakup, a childhood hardship, or a period of intense stress, you noticed a shift. You might feel less vibrant, “spaced out,” or as though you are observing your life from behind a pane of glass.

Across cultures and spiritual traditions, people have long wondered about the nature of the soul. Whether we look at it from a spiritual or a more secular perspective, the soul can simply be understood as the life force within us; the energy, awareness, and essence that animates our body and gives us a sense of being alive.

Many traditions describe the soul as the part of us that never truly dies. It is our essence, our consciousness, the invisible thread that runs through every experience we have.
When we begin with this understanding, it becomes easier to explore one of the oldest healing practices in shamanic traditions: soul retrieval.

When Parts of the Soul Withdraw

Throughout life we experience different forms of emotional shock, grief, or trauma. These experiences can occur in childhood or adulthood and may range from subtle moments of rejection or abandonment to deeper events that overwhelm our emotional capacity.

In shamanic traditions, when something happens that feels too intense to process, a part of our life force may withdraw as a form of protection.

This is not something we consciously choose. It is a natural survival response.

Rather than remaining fully present, a fragment of our energy separates from the body in order to shield us from pain that could not be integrated at the time. This phenomenon is often referred to as soul loss or soul fragmentation.

Signs That Something Feels Missing

When a part of our life force withdraws, many people describe feeling as though something inside them is incomplete.

Some common experiences associated with soul fragmentation may include:

  • Feeling disconnected or “not fully present”
  • A sense of emptiness or emotional numbness
  • Depression or loss of vitality
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Difficulty feeling joy or motivation
  • Repeating unhealthy life patterns
  • Addictive behaviours
  • Anxiety, PTSD, or depersonalisation
  • Feeling lost or directionless

From a shamanic perspective, this occurs because a part of our essence is no longer fully embodied. When our life force withdraws, the natural flow of energy within us becomes disrupted.

Why We Sometimes Repeat the Same Painful Patterns

One of the most fascinating aspects of soul loss is how it influences our behaviour.

Many people notice that certain patterns repeat in their lives: similar relationships, recurring emotional triggers, or cycles that seem difficult to break.

From a psychological perspective, this can be seen as an attempt to resolve unresolved trauma.

Shamanic traditions describe it slightly differently. They suggest that the soul naturally longs to become whole again. Because of this, we may unconsciously recreate situations that mirror the original wound, hoping that this time the story will end differently.

Without support, however, these patterns can repeat for years. We may find ourselves reliving the pain rather than healing it.

The Role of Soul Retrieval

Soul retrieval is an ancient shamanic healing practice designed to restore these lost parts of the soul.

In this process, the practitioner enters an altered state of consciousness, often supported by rhythmic drumming, sound, or breath. From this expanded awareness, the practitioner journeys beyond ordinary perception to locate the fragmented soul essence.

In my own work as a shamanic practitioner, I also gently guide the client into a subtle altered state of consciousness through meditation. This allows them to relax deeply and become more receptive to the process. Rather than the practitioner journeying alone, the client is invited to connect with their inner world at the same time, creating a shared space of awareness where healing can unfold.

Once the lost part of the soul is located, it is symbolically brought back and reintegrated into the person’s energetic field. The process is often experienced as deeply restorative, helping the individual reconnect with aspects of themselves that may have been absent for many years.

Many people report profound shifts following soul retrieval, including:

  • A renewed sense of vitality

  • Greater emotional balance

  • Feeling more present and embodied

  • The return of creativity or joy

  • A deeper connection with themselves

  • A sense of wholeness that had been missing

Some describe it as if a missing piece of themselves has finally returned home.

A Simple Way to Begin Reconnecting with Yourself

While soul retrieval itself is a specialised shamanic practice, there are gentle ways you can begin to reconnect with parts of yourself that may have gone quiet over time.

Here is a simple reflection you can try:

  • Find a quiet moment where you won’t be disturbed.
  • Sit comfortably and take a few slow breaths, allowing your attention to settle into your body.

Then ask yourself this question with curiosity rather than pressure:

“Where in my life do I feel most like myself?”

Notice what arises.

It may be when you are walking in nature, creating something with your hands, listening to music, or remembering something you loved deeply as a child.
Often the places where we feel most alive are clues pointing toward parts of ourselves that want to return.

You might also gently ask:

  • What did I love doing as a child before I felt I had to change?
  • What part of myself have I hidden in order to feel safe or accepted?
  • Where in my life do I feel most connected and present?

These questions are not meant to force answers but to open a doorway back to your inner world.
Sometimes simply acknowledging these forgotten aspects can begin the process of reconnection.

Becoming Whole Again

Soul retrieval is not about erasing the past. Instead, it is about restoring the life force needed to integrate what happened.
When lost parts of the soul return, many people experience a new sense of lightness, clarity, and inner stability. The past can be understood with greater compassion, and life can be lived with more presence and authenticity.

In essence, soul retrieval is a path back to wholeness.

A Gentle Invitation

If this topic resonates with you, I will be holding a Shamanic Gong Journey dedicated to Healing the Mother Wound on Saturday 28 March.
During this immersive experience, we will combine shamanic journeying and gong sound to explore the possibility of retrieving parts of the soul connected to early emotional wounds. It is a space for reconnection, integration, and remembering the wholeness that has always lived within you.
