The Science of Reiki: What Research Tells Us About Energy Healing

As we approach May, it is the perfect opportunity to explore nurturing practices that support your wellbeing. Reiki, is a gentle yet powerful form of energy healing, and there is growing scientific evidence highlighting its potential to improve mental, emotional, and physical health.

What Is Reiki?

Reiki (pronounced ray-key) comes from the Japanese words rei (universal) and ki (life energy). Originating in Japan in the 1920s, it is a holistic healing modality that supports the mind, body, and spirit. Unlike treatments that target isolated symptoms, Reiki aims to restore balance to the entire energetic system.

During a session, a practitioner places their hands on or lightly over the body’s energy points to support the body’s natural healing processes. While many clients feel the effects through immediate calm and clarity, modern science is now validating these experiences with clear data.

One of the most substantial large scale studies into Reiki’s effectiveness was conducted in collaboration with Harvard University and the Centre for Reiki Research.

  • Analysis of 1,284 Reiki sessions across 99 practitioners found significant improvements in pain, anxiety, and overall wellbeing after just a single session.
  • A related trial of 1,411 sessions showed statistically significant improvements in broader benefits, including improved mood, reduced tiredness, and even shortness of breath.

Stress Reduction

Reiki has been shown to rapidly shift the body into a state of deep relaxation by activating the parasympathetic nervous system.

  • Research indicates a 72.62% reduction in perceived stress and a 63.34% reduction in pain after brief 10-minute sessions in high-stress communities.
  • Studies have shown that Reiki helps regulate cortisol (the stress hormone) and increases Heart Rate Variability (HRV), a key marker of emotional resilience.

 Targeted Pain Management

New research highlights how Reiki is being used to manage both acute and chronic pain:

  • Osteoarthritis Relief: In a 2025 placebo-controlled trial, 55% of patients with knee osteoarthritis experienced clinically significant pain reduction, compared to only 20% in the placebo group.
  • Surgical Recovery: A 2026 study concluded that Reiki has a significantly positive effect on pain for up to 24 hours post-surgery and reduces the need for pain medication.
  • Cancer Support: Patients in day oncology programs reported their average pain scores dropped from 4.4 to 2.32 after completed Reiki interventions.

Mental Health and Hormonal Support

  • A 2024 peer-reviewed meta-analysis in BMC Palliative Care involving 824 participants confirmed Reiki’s significant therapeutic effect on anxiety.
  • Additionally, a 2025 randomized clinical trial found Reiki significantly reduced menopausal symptoms and depression levels in postmenopausal women.
  • Studies also suggest reiki improves sleep quality, by easing mental tension and supporting deeper sleep through parasympathetic activation.

Integration into Mainstream Healthcare

Reiki is now used in over 800 hospitals in the US and several NHS trusts in the UK for its efficacy in reducing patient distress. Notable UK locations include:
