Stress doesn’t just affect how you feel, it changes how your body holds itself. Discover how the Spinal Flow Technique works with the stress and tension your body continues to carry.
You close the laptop, leave the office and head home, but your shoulders are still tense, your breathing remains shallow and your mind continues to replay the day. You may have physically left work, but your body has not necessarily received the message that the pressure is over. This is where the Spinal Flow Technique offers a different approach, working with the body to release the stress and tension it continues to hold. FlowEssence is delighted to bring Spinal Flow to Light Centre Monument and the City of London.
City workers may think stress is entirely mental, but during a pressured day they may unconsciously brace their jaw, lift their shoulders, restrict their breathing, stiffen their spine and hold their pelvis still. Even after work ends, that physical pattern can remain.
When stress becomes part of everyday life, the body can remain in a state of protection long after the immediate demand has passed. Over time, this may show up as tension, restricted movement, poor sleep, headaches, digestive discomfort, low energy, health issues or the feeling that you can never fully switch off.
A holiday, massage or evening on the sofa watching Netflix may provide temporary relief, but if your nervous system repeatedly returns to the same pattern, the effects of stress can continue to build.
Try this three-minute end-of-day reset
Try this to interrupt your body’s “work posture” and help the body start to release areas of tension and stress. Before leaving your desk, take a moment to notice the position your body has adopted, not the posture you think it should have.
1. Find where you are bracing
Without correcting anything, notice your jaw, shoulders, stomach and hands. Where are you using effort that the current moment does not require?
2. Restore movement through your spine
Sit towards the front of your chair with both feet on the floor. Gently tilt your pelvis forwards and backwards, allowing your lower back to arch and round naturally. Continue slowly for eight to ten repetitions without forcing the movement.
3. Let the movement travel upwards
Make the pelvic movement slightly smaller and notice whether a gentle ripple begins to travel through your spine. Keep your shoulders and jaw relaxed.
4. Stand differently
When you stand, pause before walking away. Feel both feet beneath you, soften your knees and notice whether your breathing, posture or sense of tension has changed.
Small resets like this can be useful, but often the body needs more consistent support to release the stress and tension patterns it has been carrying, sometimes for years.
A different approach to stress and tension
I’m Vanita Pierre, founder of FlowEssence Holistic Hub and a Spinal Flow Technique practitioner at Light Centre Monument.
Spinal Flow is a gentle, non-forceful technique using light therapeutic touch at specific points along the spine and cranium. It works with the body’s innate capacity to release stored tension, reconnect with greater ease, repair and restore, and support nervous system regulation.
My Nervous System Reset classes offer another way to step out of constant pressure. Through movement, stretching, breathwork, meditation, HeartMath, energy practices and sound healing, the classes give you dedicated time to stop, reset and reconnect with yourself.
This work is particularly valuable for people who spend their days sitting, concentrating, rushing, meeting deadlines, managing responsibility or constantly responding to other people’s needs.
You do not have to wait until stress becomes exhaustion or discomfort becomes your normal. Your body is communicating with you all the time. The earlier you listen, the better you can support it.
