Tight Neck and Shoulders? Try Dancing at Your Desk

No, I’m not suggesting you turn your next Zoom meeting into a dance class.

But if you spend hours sitting at a computer, your body might appreciate a little more movement than you think.

When we concentrate, we can become surprisingly still. We stay in the same position, our shoulders gradually creep upwards, our arms remain fixed on the keyboard, and we might even hold our breath or clench our jaw without noticing.

By the end of the day, your neck, shoulders, back or hips may feel tight and tired.

So, what can you do?

Move — rather than trying to find the perfect posture

There isn’t necessarily one perfect position to sit in all day. The bigger problem can be staying in any position for too long.

Change position. Roll your shoulders. Turn your head. Reach your arms overhead. Stand up. Walk around while you’re on the phone.

And yes — dance at your desk if you feel like it!

Check your jaw and breathing

When you’re concentrating, pause for a moment and ask yourself:

Am I holding my breath?
Are my teeth touching?
Are my shoulders tense?

Let your jaw soften, allow your shoulders to drop and take a few comfortable breaths.

You don’t need a complicated routine. A few seconds of movement and awareness, repeated throughout the day, can be much more realistic than waiting until the evening to try to “fix” everything.

Make movement part of your day

Your body doesn’t only move when you’re exercising.

Walking to get a coffee, standing during a phone call, changing your sitting position, stretching between meetings — it all counts.

So the next time you notice yourself sitting completely still for hours, put on a song, move your shoulders, wiggle a little and give your body a change of scenery.

Your desk might be where you work, but it doesn’t have to be where your body stops moving.
