Background

Irish-born Barry began his journey as a manual therapist 25 years ago when he started his training as a Sports Therapist in Belfast. After qualifying a Sports Therapist in 1997, he moved to London where he obtained his BSc (Hons) in Sports and Exercise Sciences at the University of Roehampton, gaining a firm grounding in sports physiology, anatomy, sports psychology, sports biomechanics and motor control.

After completing his first degree, Barry spent a number of years working as a personal trainer and sports therapist in London, Hertfordshire and Portugal. During this time, Barry worked in various gyms, corporates and sports clubs, assisting clients from every walk of life with a wide range of fitness and therapy needs.

It was while working as a sports therapist within an osteopathy practice that Barry observed the dramatic benefits of osteopathy. It didn’t take long for him to realise that becoming an osteopath was the natural progression for him and the perfect way to combine his strong aptitude for manual therapy, his commitment to relieving muscle and joint pain and his experience of working with a wide-range of people to overcome challenges and achieve their goals.

After five years of training at the London School of Osteopathy, Barry qualified as an osteopath in 2010 and then spent almost three years practising in a busy osteopathy clinic in Singapore. He returned to London in 2013 to establish The Moving Body and has loved working with patients from across London ever since.

Passion for exercise

Exercise has been a big part of Barry’s life since he competed in his first triathlon aged 18. He is a keen runner and cyclist, completing the New York marathon twice in aid of Help the Aged and cycling from London to Paris in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. While living in Singapore, Barry took up dragon boating and soon became Vice Captain of the Irish team – the Gaelic Dragons – with which he competed regularly.

Barry believes that effective osteopathic treatment is as much about understanding the patient as the injury; the two are indivisible. While Barry’s background means his particular expertise is treating people with sports injuries, his patients include people from every walk of life, including performers, older people, mothers and babies, office workers and manual workers. He looks forward to meeting you in clinic soon!
